Cardona, in Bages, is world-renowned for the Muntanya de Sal, a salt diapir unique in Europe that was mined from Iberian times until just a few decades ago, and for its imposing medieval castle, today a parador. The river Cardener runs through the municipal district at the foot of the settlement. Beyond the salt phenomenon, the limestone relief of the surrounding area also contains karst cavities of its own.
