Caves and shafts in Bages

Bages combines two quite different karst terrains: the northern slope of the Montserrat conglomerate massif and, further north, the salt mountain of Cardona, one of the reference points for gypsum and salt karst in Catalonia. This lithological variety means the county’s caves and potholes do not follow a single pattern, but rather two distinct geological processes within the same territory.

179 cavitats (127 coves i 52 avencs) in Bages are part of the catalogue. Most are found in Mura, Marganell and Monistrol de Montserrat. Cova dels Meandres de Sal, amb 4300 m de recorregut.

The surveyed length of the caves with this data ranges from 3 to 4300 metres. The depth ranges from 1 to 187 metres. 5 different rock types are recorded here.
