Caves and potholes in Bages

Bages combines two quite different karst terrains: the northern slope of the Montserrat conglomerate massif and, further north, the salt mountain of Cardona, one of the reference points for gypsum and salt karst in Catalonia. This lithological variety means the county’s caves and potholes do not follow a single pattern, but rather two distinct geological processes within the same territory.

177 cavitats (125 coves i 52 avencs) in Bages are part of the catalogue. Most are found in Mura, Marganell and Monistrol de Montserrat. MEANDRES DE SAL, COVA DELS, amb 4300 m de recorregut.

Bages has an area of 1092 km², located mostly in la Serralada Prelitoral. This means an approximate density of 16.2 catalogued caves per 100 km².
