Travertine Caves in Catalonia

Travertine is not an “original” rock like massive limestone, but the result of the chemical precipitation of carbonate from waters carrying it —typical of springs, waterfalls and drip pools. The cavities that form in it are few but singular: they tend to appear where there still is (or once was) an active water flow depositing material year after year.

111 cavitats (96 coves i 15 avencs) with Travertine lithology are part of the catalogue. Most are found in Esparreguera, Cabrera d'Anoia and Serinyà. Coves del Mamut, amb 537 m de recorregut.

The surveyed length of the caves with this data ranges from 2 to 537 metres. The depth ranges from 1 to 60 metres. Each entry includes exact location, coordinates and, where available, photographs and survey maps, with a downloadable GPX track. The whole list on this page can also be exported as CSV or JSON.
