Caves and potholes in Garrotxa

Garrotxa is the catalog’s geological exception: its Zona Volcànica, with the volcanoes of Croscat and Santa Margarida as landmarks, has generated cavities in basalt —lava tubes— that have nothing to do with the calcareous karst usual elsewhere in Catalonia. It is, by far, the go-to county for anyone looking for volcanic caves rather than dissolution caves.

There are 112 cavitats (92 coves i 20 avencs) catalogued in Garrotxa, mostly in Montagut i Oix, Sales de Llierca and Sant Feliu de Pallerols. CORREJADES, LES, amb 1835 m de recorregut.

Garrotxa has an area of 735 km², located mostly in el Prepirineu. This means an approximate density of 15.2 catalogued caves per 100 km².
