Caves and potholes in Priorat

Priorat, known for its vineyards and llicorella slate, has its reference karst massif in the serra de Montsant: a relief of limestones and conglomerates that rises suddenly above the plain and concentrates most of the county’s cataloged caves and potholes, with a marked geological contrast to the surrounding vineyards.

The catalogue includes 192 cavitats (103 coves i 89 avencs) in Priorat, concentrated in Margalef, la Morera de Montsant and Ulldemolins. AISLING, AVENC DE L', amb 871 m de recorregut.

Priorat has an area of 499 km², located mostly in la Serralada Prelitoral. This means an approximate density of 38.5 catalogued caves per 100 km².
