Caves and potholes in Porqueres

Porqueres spreads along the western shore of the estany de Banyoles, the largest natural lake in Catalonia, within the Pla de l’Estany comarca. Notable here is the 12th-century Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Porqueres, built almost at the water’s edge. The limestone terrain of this sector, formed largely by the activity of underwater springs that feed the lake, has also given rise to some catalogued cavities within the municipality.
