Caves and potholes in Montserrat

Montserrat, with its unmistakable conglomerate profile and the Benedictine monastery on its cliffs, is probably the best-known massif in Catalonia. It extends mainly across Baix Llobregat and Bages, with foothills towards Anoia. The rock, made of cemented pebbles, gives rise to cavities of morphology very different from the usual karst ones – overhangs and erosion cavities more than large underground systems – cataloged in a notable number despite the terrain’s unusual nature for classic speleology.
