Caves and potholes in el Montsant

The massif of Montsant, protected as a Parc Natural, dominates the landscape of Priorat with its cliffs of conglomerate and quartzite – a lithology uncommon for karst, which generates unusual forms there. It also extends towards Garrigues and Conca de Barberà, in a setting of mountain vineyards that has made Priorat one of Catalonia’s most recognized appellations. The number of cataloged cavities is considerable, with potholes often associated with the massif’s own cliff line.

There are 147 cavitats (78 coves i 69 avencs) catalogued in el Montsant, mostly in Margalef, la Morera de Montsant and Ulldemolins. AISLING, AVENC DE L', amb 871 m de recorregut.
