Caves and potholes in Val d'Aran

Val d’Aran is, geographically, a case apart: the only Catalan county on the Atlantic slope, drained by the Garona towards the Bay of Biscay. Its bedrock, with a greater presence of granitic and metamorphic rocks than the rest of the Catalan Pyrenees, means the cataloged caves and potholes are fewer there than in counties dominated by limestone, such as Pallars or Alt Urgell.

70 cavitats (16 coves i 54 avencs) in Val d'Aran have been catalogued, mainly in Vielha e Mijaran, Naut Aran and Bossòst. BARGADÈRA, SISTEMA DE LA, amb 2100 m de recorregut.

Val d'Aran has an area of 633.6 km², located mostly in el Pirineu Axial. This means an approximate density of 11.0 catalogued caves per 100 km².
