Limestone Caves in Catalonia

Caves in limestone are the benchmark terrain of Catalan speleology: the rock dissolves in slightly acidic rainwater and infiltration, and given enough time gives rise to the longest and deepest systems in the catalog. If you’re looking for speleology in karst terrain, this is by far the lithology with the greatest variety of recorded cavities — from small overhangs to systems several kilometers long.

The catalogue includes 2722 cavitats (1437 coves i 1285 avencs) with Limestone lithology, concentrated in Begues, Sitges and Vallirana. Cova de la Fou de Bor, amb 4246 m de recorregut.

The surveyed length of the caves with this data ranges from 2 to 4246 metres. The depth ranges from 1 to 571 metres. You can check the full entry for location, access and, where available, photographs and survey maps. The whole set of caves on this page can also be downloaded as CSV or JSON.

La litologia Calcàries és una roca sedimentària carbonatada molt soluble en aigua lleugerament àcida — l'origen del relleu càrstic i de la gran majoria de coves i avencs de Catalunya.
